Economist Robin Hahnel held a public lecture under the title “The Crisis of Social Democracy and the Future of The Left” on September 12th, 2012. During his lecture Prof. Hahnel answered questions about dismantling of the welfare state, its prospects in global capitalist economy and how the Left should deal with these issues.
According to Hahnel, the Left should take distance from reformistic thought, which has traditionally been the cornerstone of social democratic ideology. ”Left should be active in fighting against capitalism and invent well-argued alternatives to the whole system”, he said. One of his answers is so-called participatory economy. He also emphasizes that Europeans should resist all reforms proposed by the political elite that are claimed to be crucial because of the ongoing economic crisis.
